Abstract

Mental health is a universal concern. Positive mental health, or wellbeing, affects all areas of our lives and it is “fundamental to our collective and individual ability as humans to think, emote, interact with each other, earn a living and enjoy life”. Yet, mental ill health is highly prevalent in all countries, with 1 in 8 people in the world living with a mental disorder, according to the World Health Organisation. Figures can be even higher among people living with socio-economic deprivation, those who experience social exclusion and stigma, people who live with long-term physical health conditions, carers and those with a history of substance abuse. Given the pervasiveness of mental health issues among the general population, coaches are likely to work with clients who are experiencing some sort of mental distress. What is the role of coaching in supporting clients’ mental health and/or as an intervention to help them cope with mental distress or ill health? This chapter will explore theories of mental health and mental illness, the debate about coaching and mental health, professional boundaries and the implications for coaching practitioners.
