Abstract | The ways in which language reflects and perpetuates societal attitudes are particularly evident in the discourse surrounding menstruation. Euphemisms, such as that time of the month or on the blob, have long served to navigate the cultural taboos and discomfort associated with this natural biological process. Despite menstruation’s universality, direct references to it have often been avoided in favour of softer, metaphorical, or humorous phrases. This chapter explores the multifaceted role of menstrual euphemisms in everyday discourse, examining their evolution, cultural variations, and ongoing implications. |
