Abstract	In this paper I examine the relationship between the right to establish home in the receiving society and the series of practices of ‘nesting’, ‘home-making’ and becoming ‘of place’. Understanding of this relationship is important because integration and active participation of newcomers in receiving societies is not only about legally established, formal citizenship rights. Within this state constructed discourse being a member is linked to the notion of a ‘right baring citizen’ who ‘belongs’ to ‘a national society of citizens’ (Holston&Appadurai 1996), which is linked to a territorial nation state. However, how people integrate in the receiving society is also centrally linked to informal practices of social inclusion or strategies ‘from below’, which link diverse people, as individuals and groups in different local settings, predominantly cities, in which they struggle to regain control over and reconstruct their lives.
