Abstract | When we shop are we exercising our freedom? Or are we more like prisoners exercising in the yard under supervision? Is the consumer market a realm of democracy, or of oligarchy that subordinates us to it - even as it researches our desires which themselves are the often the projection of ever more advanced marketing techniques? Neal Lawson of Compass launched an assault on the way we shop last year in a Penguin you can see here (but you still have to buy it): All Consuming [8]. A critical review was published in Chartist by Mica Nava [9] in November to which Neal has replied [10]. It's great to see an exchange about consumerism and citizenship - and here it is. |
