Abstract | This article explores attitudes to forgiveness giving a range of illustrations from international politics through to classic literature. It draws on personal accounts from the cold war era in Eastern Germany. The article concludes that balancing the claims of justice and forgiveness is morally and politically important for communities to rebuild themselves and can be achieved by open discussion in the right context. |
