Abstract | The Albanian theatre post-1989 has struggled to re-engage its audience, which has been alienated because of how the communist ideology has dominated institutional structures and cultures of theatre-making. The opening to the outside world brought influences from European contemporary theatre, including experimentation and interdisciplinarity. Various theatre companies have performed exemplary artistic and social works, but their activities have been primarily limited to the capital of Albania, Tirana. Even though the financial challenges have hindered progress, theatre makers have acknowledged the importance of developing a distinct theatrical voice of Albania, initiating community engagement and envisioning a grassroots movement. |
