Abstract | The number of people in the UK aged over 75 has increased by 89 per cent since 1974, and this age group currently makes up 8 per cent of the population (Office for National Statistics 2015). Approximately 8 per cent of the Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) community in the UK are classified as older adults, and this translates to approximately 500,000 older BAME residents in the UK, based on the 2001 census data (PRIAE 2009). This chapter considers issues relating to mental health, ageing and ethnicity. The construction of ageing and mental health and well-being in different cultures will be briefly discussed, while issues of marginalisation and discrimination including indirect discrimination will be reviewed. Finally, issues relating to accessing services and developing appropriate services for BAME older adults with mental health issues will be considered. Some key messages will be presented, which may contribute to anti-discriminatory thinking and practice being further developed in this area. |
