Abstract | In this chapter I focus on how knowledge gathered by British and American mental health professionals and social scientists (especially psychologists), has been used by the military, intelligence and security communities over the last fifty years. In particular, I will focus on the evolution of psychological torture (i.e. coercive and aversive psychological interrogation techniques) based on this knowledge but I will also examine the spread of this knowledge into related areas such as surveillance. |
