Abstract | Though teachers in schools are increasingly being asked to take responsibility for the education and training of prospective teachers, little empirical research has been undertaken into the support that school-based teacher educators (SBTEs) require to perform their duties as teacher educators. This chapter presents some initial findings drawing on the largest international survey (n=1680) examining the professional learning needs of this group of teacher educators. This research, from the International Forum for Teacher Educator Development (InFo-TED), aims to provide insight into the professional role of SBTEs, identify their professional learning needs in different national contexts and to discuss the policy implications with regard to the development of adequate support measures for this heterogeneous group. This chapter explores their professional learning needs in six of the twenty twenty countries involved in the survey (Austria, England, Israel, the Netherlands, Portugal and Scotland) with a specific focus on practitioner-based research activity, and scholarly reading and writing. |
